Our StoryNuestra historia
A room that stopped being big enough.Un cuarto que dejó de ser suficiente.
How a community of converts, one generous brother and a room that kept filling became a foundation.Cómo una comunidad de conversos, un hermano generoso y un cuarto que se seguía llenando se convirtió en una fundación.
He was not looking for anything. No buscaba nada.
He had moved to Mexico, and what he found there was not something he expected. Mexican Muslims, most of them converts, were building a community quietly and with almost nothing. No funding. No institution to call. None of the support that Muslims in other countries never think about, because it has always simply been there.
What they had was conviction, and each other. It turns out that is enough to start with.
Then more people came.Luego llegó más gente.
On Fridays they gathered for Jummah in a space barely large enough to hold them. Then more people came. Then more again. At some point the room that had been enough stopped being enough.
It is the best problem a community can have, and the hardest one to solve without money.
A brother who acted.Un hermano que actuó.
A brother in the United States saw what was happening, and he did not stop at admiring it. He acted. With his support, a proper mosque was built in Playa del Carmen. Well built, well equipped, and open. Bien construida, bien equipada y abierta.
And then it came alive in a way numbers only partly capture. The five daily prayers are prayed there. Taraweeh fills it through Ramadan, and iftar is served every night. Eid is celebrated with families and children. Quran, Arabic and Islamic foundations are taught there through Emara Academy, to children and adults and to new Muslims taking their first steps in the deen.Y entonces cobró vida de una forma que los números sólo capturan en parte.
Taraweeh once drew two or three people. Now it draws more than fifteen. More than seventy pray Jummah. Two or three people a month say the shahada.
The weight one man carried.El peso que cargaba un hombre.
But a mosque that is alive costs money every single month, and for a long time those costs fell on one man. No single person can carry a community indefinitely, however much he wants to.Pero una mezquita viva cuesta dinero cada mes, y durante mucho tiempo esos costos cayeron sobre un solo hombre.
So the community began to accept donations, and almost at once things got easier. Programs steadied. The pressure lifted. A community that had been surviving began, for the first time, to plan.
That is when the real idea arrived.Entonces llegó la verdadera idea.
Why not everywhere?¿Por qué no en todas partes?
If this worked in Playa del Carmen, why not in every town where Muslims are praying in a room that is too small, or not praying together at all? Mexico counted 3,760 Muslims in 2010 and 7,982 in 2020.
What was built in Playa del Carmen can be built in Cancún, in Tulum, in Mérida, and beyond. Emara Foundation was founded to do exactly that.
More than a building. And one that is ours.Más que un edificio. Y uno que sea nuestro.
Because a community needs more than a building. It needs somewhere to turn when a family is in crisis. Someone to call when a Muslim dies far from home. A place to celebrate Eid. And people who notice when a new Muslim stops showing up.Porque una comunidad necesita más que un edificio.
Today every room we open is rented, and rent never ends. So our goal is to raise the money to buy land and build mosques of our own, one town at a time, each one the community center of its town. We want the money that leaves every month as rent to become a home that stays.
The believers, in their mutual love and mercy and compassion, are like one body: when one limb aches, the whole body responds.

Four commitments that decide everything else.Cuatro compromisos que deciden todo lo demás.
- Amanah
Every donation is an amanah, a trust: something placed in our hands that is not our own. Funds given to us are not ours. Every peso is tracked, reported and spent on exactly what it was given for. We treat this as a religious obligation, not a compliance exercise.
- PermanencePermanencia
We build institutions, not events. Every decision is measured against whether it outlasts the people who made it.Construimos instituciones, no eventos.
- Honesty about scaleHonestidad sobre nuestro tamaño
We are early, and we say so. We would rather show a donor real numbers a year from now than impressive projections today.
- BelongingPertenencia
Nobody who enters Islam with us is left to walk alone. Follow-up is a program, not a courtesy.
