Prayer spaces, opened and then runEspacios de oración, abiertos y luego operados

Where a community has formed with nowhere to pray, we rent a musalla and equip it. Opening one is the easy half. The hard half is the twelve months that follow, and that is the part nobody funds.Donde se ha formado una comunidad sin dónde rezar, rentamos una musalla y la equipamos. Abrirla es la mitad fácil. La mitad difícil son los doce meses siguientes, y es la parte que nadie financia.

So we run them the way a manager runs a building. Rent paid on time every month. Electricity, water and internet. Cleaning, repairs, wudu facilities, carpets, air conditioning that works in August. A key holder, a prayer schedule, and the classes and gatherings that make the room worth keeping.Por eso los operamos como un administrador opera un edificio. La renta pagada a tiempo cada mes. Luz, agua e internet. Limpieza, reparaciones, zona de wudu, alfombras, aire acondicionado que funcione en agosto. Alguien con la llave, un horario de oración, y las clases y reuniones que hacen que valga la pena conservar el lugar.

Our goal is to stop renting. We are raising money to buy land and build a mosque of our own in each town, so the money that leaves every month as rent becomes a permanent home for the community instead. Until then, a rented room that stays open serves more people than a building fund that never closes.Nuestra meta es dejar de rentar. Reunimos dinero para comprar terreno y construir una mezquita propia en cada ciudad, para que el dinero que sale cada mes como renta se convierta en un hogar permanente para la comunidad. Mientras tanto, un lugar rentado que sigue abierto sirve a más gente que un fondo de construcción que nunca se cierra.

Education, through our sister foundation Emara AcademyEducación, a través de nuestra fundación hermana Emara Academy

Emara Academy and Emara Foundation are sister foundations with two jobs. The Academy takes care of education: Quran, Arabic and Islamic studies for children, adults and new Muslims. The Foundation takes care of Muslims and mosques.Emara Academy y Emara Foundation son fundaciones hermanas con dos tareas. La Academia se ocupa de la educación: Corán, árabe y estudios islámicos para niños, adultos y nuevos musulmanes. La Fundación se ocupa de los musulmanes y las mezquitas.

So we do not open a second school. We support the Academy’s work, we give its classes a place in the spaces we run, we send families to it, and we run campaigns together, such as one million Qurans for Mexico.Por eso no abrimos una segunda escuela. Apoyamos el trabajo de la Academia, damos a sus clases un lugar en los espacios que operamos, le enviamos familias y hacemos campañas juntos, como un millón de Coranes para México.

We present Islam across the region in Spanish: public events, printed materials, gift copies of the Quran, and travel to towns where no one has ever been asked.Presentamos el islam en toda la región en español: eventos públicos, materiales impresos, ejemplares del Corán de regalo y viajes a pueblos donde nadie lo ha preguntado nunca.

Then comes the part that actually decides whether any of it mattered. Most people who take shahada here do it without a single Muslim relative. If nobody calls them in the weeks after, they drift, and most do. So follow-up is a program with names in a book, not a good intention: someone teaches them to pray, someone invites them to eat, someone notices when they stop coming.Luego viene la parte que de verdad decide si algo de esto sirvió. La mayoría de quienes toman la shahada aquí lo hacen sin un solo familiar musulmán. Si nadie los busca en las semanas siguientes, se alejan, y la mayoría se aleja. Por eso el seguimiento es un programa con nombres anotados, no una buena intención: alguien les enseña a rezar, alguien los invita a comer, alguien nota cuando dejan de venir.

Medical costs, rent that came due, food, an emergency that a family cannot absorb. The amounts are usually small and the timing is always bad.Gastos médicos, una renta que venció, comida, una emergencia que una familia no puede absorber. Las cantidades suelen ser pequeñas y el momento siempre es malo.

New Muslims carry a particular version of this. Some lose work, housing or family support the month they convert. They are the least likely to ask and the most likely to disappear if no one helps, so we go looking rather than waiting.Los nuevos musulmanes viven una versión particular de esto. Algunos pierden trabajo, vivienda o apoyo familiar el mes en que se convierten. Son los que menos piden y los que más probablemente desaparecen si nadie ayuda, así que los buscamos en vez de esperar.

When a Muslim dies here the family has days, not weeks, and no idea where to start. We arrange the ghusl, the salat al-janazah and a burial that meets Islamic obligation, and where a family wants their dead returned home and cannot pay for it, we cover the repatriation.Cuando un musulmán muere aquí la familia tiene días, no semanas, y ninguna idea de por dónde empezar. Organizamos el gusl, la salat al-yanaza y una sepultura que cumple la obligación islámica, y cuando una familia quiere repatriar a su difunto y no puede pagarlo, cubrimos el traslado.

We intend to buy land for a Muslim cemetery so that burying someone properly stops depending on what a given municipality will permit that week. We organise Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha for the region: the prayer, the food, and something for the children to remember. For a convert whose family does not celebrate, and for a traveller a long way from home, this is the day that decides whether they feel they belong to anything.Organizamos el Eid al-Fitr y el Eid al-Adha para la región: la oración, la comida y algo que los niños recuerden. Para un converso cuya familia no celebra, y para un viajero lejos de casa, este es el día que decide si siente que pertenece a algo.

In Ramadan we serve iftar every night, so that no one breaks their fast alone and no one has to wonder where their next meal will come from.En Ramadán servimos iftar cada noche, para que nadie rompa su ayuno solo y nadie tenga que preguntarse de dónde saldrá su próxima comida.
